Scope and Content
General intelligence on the Persian army and the domestic political situation in the country ; This group consists of dispatches from Russian military agents and diplomatic representatives, and memorandums from officers of the Russian army, on the political and economic situation in Persia, the state of its armed forces, the Persians’ oppression of their Armenian population, the Armenians’ aspiration to unite with Russia, Persian military operations against the city of Herat in 1837–38, the activities of representatives of the Russian mission in Persia, the reorganization of the Persian army, and the appointment of Russian officers as instructors to the Persian cavalry. This group of documents includes a memorandum from General A.P. Yermolov describing the journey of the Russian embassy into Persia in 1817, and a historical, military and political overview of Persia written by Colonel Enegolm in 1827.
Geographical, topographical, statistical, ethnographical and hydrographical intelligence on Persia
Geographical and topographical intelligence ; This consists of geographical descriptions and maps of Persia as a whole; maps of the provinces of Persia; and maps of Persian cities, fortresses and architectural structures. The maps of Persian cities are usually accompanied by descriptions of those cities. Amongst these documents there are maps of the country showing the administrative division, maps of Teheran from 1826, a map of the palace of Abbas Mirza in Tabriz, and a plan of a mosque in Ardebil.
Statistical and ethnographical intelligence on Persia ; This set of documents consists of military-statistical descriptions of Persia and its provinces, and of memorandums, notes and other documents on the country’s population and populated areas. They include a list of the tribes living in Persia, showing the places of their settlement, and a list of Persian cities accompanied by a brief description of them, from 1809; lists of Armenian settlements in Persia from 1827 and 1829; and other documents.
Intelligence on Persian communications (routes and roads) ; This group of documents consists of descriptions of roads and routes linking populated areas, route maps, and road maps. They include a map of Persia showing all the roads and railways, stations, post-offices, telegraph lines, and the number of inhabitants in the cities, produced by the Russian Consul General in Bender-Bushir, N.P. Passek, in the 1870s; an early-19th-century index of the distances between various Persian cities; a description of the main roads leading to Persia, from 1827; and early-20th-century diagrammatic drawings of mountain passes, showing cross-sections of the roads across those passes.
Hydrographical intelligence on Persia ; This consists of maps and descriptions of the Gulf of Astrabad, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, and of the rivers and lakes of Persia.
